Hi guys, this is my first post and I need some help. My 1997 328ic needs a computer (DME). Can I replace it with any computer for that year, make and model? Some say that the VIN is (burned) into the computers memory and you have to go to the dealer for another. I do have the numbers off the old computer. Do I have to go to the dealer and reflash the replacement? Thanks for your help!

it's the anti-theft that needs to be reflashed, otherwise the car won't start. there are companies that sell performance software that can remove the anti-theft function completely, might be cheaper than the dealer and give you a little power boost
