I have a 1990 BMW 325i Convertible with 111,000 miles. Excellent condition unmodified 5 speed car. The previous owner replaced the steering rack with an aftermarket one (since BMW no longer will supply the excellent ZF racks E30s came with). Shortly after i got the car the aftermarket one failed and blew out. I had my mechanic (an excellent BMW technician with years of experience) rebuild the aftermarket one with a BMW seal kit for the unit (which they still sell). Unfortunately that did not work because the aftermarket tolerances are a bit different than the ZF unit so it still leaks. Any ideas on how to proceed with finding a good steering rack that is reliable like the ZF units were? I would like to find a new ZF unit for the car, but I have not found one as yet. I do not want to use an aftermarket unit because of the poor quality.
