Dying battery?

I recently installed the oem hitch and wiring on my 2007 x5. I was waiting to get it programmed until I had some other maintenance work finished so I could have all the indicators reset at the same time. However, after a little more than a week, the car wouldn't start. I jumped it ok and it went dead again after a little less time. Checked the fuses for the hitch for any draw across them and nothing. The harness connector plugs into an isolated module so I don't think that is it. It has now gone a third time.

I'm going to schedule it to go in but wondered if it is just a coincidence that the battery may be failing right after the hitch installation. The last time I jumped it, it took several minutes before it would start. The car is only 4 years old. Is that normal for a battery in a bmw to go bad that soon? Never had one go bad on me.

    Thanks in advance.

Ok, supposedly a dying battery. Won't hold a charge. Said they couldn't do any programming til it was replaced so I told them to go ahead and do it. Now they tell me the system crashes when they try to reprogram it.

Three failed attempts and now BMW NA says to disconnect the hitch wiring and try again because there is a power surge on the CAN(?) buss. I drove the car for 3 weeks with the wiring connected and even after the battery dying 3 times the car would start. So why would it be an issue now just trying to reflash the ECU?
