I need to replace the rear tires for my 2005, 330Ci. The tires on the car are Continental-ContiSportContact, 245/40/ZR17 with 18,000 miles. Looking for recommendations. The front tires are still in good shape. Also can I have different brand tires on the front and rear? Concerned if that will affect handling, ride and comfort. Thanks!
If you are only replacing the rear tires, I would get the exact same replacement tires and not mix manufacturers or types. It may effect all the areas you mentioned depending on the replacement tire you select. I am not saying you would not get around fine on a mixed set, but different tires react differently in the rain and snow and that is not the time to find out. After some quick searching, I see that Tire Rack has your size rear tires (I assume you have a staggered setup) for $196ea plus shipping. Discount Tire Direct has your tires for $205ea with no additional shipping. Further, between February 2nd and March 23rd, 2009, you an receive a $75 Visa Gift Card when you purchase any set of four Continental tires from either site. Not sure that would make financial sense, but it is an option. Since 2005, Continental has come out with the ContiSport Contact 2 and 3, so be sure you are looking at the "plain" Contact as the tread might be different as well as other aspects. If you are not familiar with mail ordering your tires, these are two reputable companies that stand behind their products. Both will ship the tires to the repair shop of your choice, or to your door. Figure an additional $25+ per tire to mount and balance.
