I have an early 1982 model 633CSI (production 11/1981) and have not done a brake job on this car before, but did some exploratory work this weekend to get ready for the actual job next week.
What I discovered is that the early E24's have a whole different caliper and brake pad setup and I have not been able to figure out where to start. The brake pads are somewhat square in shape and the caliper has two halves bolted together with 4 bolts, removing the bolts will allow the two sections of the caliper to separate. Brake fluid flows between these two section of the caliper (I found out the hard way since I removed these four bolts and brake fluid started oozing out. My questions is this: In order to replace the brake pads I assume the caliper has to be removed completely, or at least remove one bolt and loosen the other so it can swivel away from the rotor; or are the pads removed and installed from the open end of the caliper. Any advice is much appreciated. I have added two photos for reference.
    Thanks,
    Alan

UPDATE: I found information on another forum, but for the E23 which has the same caliper. I have attached the information, hope this is helpful when replacing your brake pads. You don't need any of the special tools, use a pick tool to pull the pads out, along with a simple metal woodworking clamp to compress the caliper pistons.
