Can anyone confirm that all new 2016-17 M4's would come with run flat tires? Are regular tires even an option?
The options for an M4 doing a 'Build Your Own' on BMWUSA.com don't get very specific. "Mixed performance tires" doesn't tell you if rft or not. Compared doing the same with an M240i - it says standard is non-rft "performance" tires, with all-season rft's as an option. Tire Rack shows Michelin non-rft PSS's as "OE" in both 18" and 19" sizes.
Thanks, guys, FYI I have also sent this question to BMW USA and to Mike Miller at Roundel to see what the "official" answer is. For what it is worth, I have had two different BMW dealers (specific sales people) say that "all cars come standard with run flats, including M4". Although my 2016 435i xDrive tires say "Run Flat" on the side, the tires on an M4 the dealer had did not have that phrase, but they said the "star" on the side meant the same thing. When I test drove that "star tire" M4, I must say that I thought the ride was better than my 435, and that M4 did NOT have the adaptive suspension (fixed rate instead), but you never know for sure unless you drive both cars back to back on the same road. Anyway...it would be interesting to have the "real answer"!
More info...both Mike Miller of Roundel and The Tire Rack confirmed that the "star" on the sidewall means it is a BMW approved original equipment tire, much as the N does for Porsches (N Spec). It has NOTHING to do with indicating it is a run flat tire. Run Flat tires either say "Run Flat" on the sidewalk, or some say "RFT" or "SSR". The BMW USA website's "Build Your Own" for an M4 says the tires are "performance tires" and has a footnote which says there is no spare but the car comes with a Mobility Kit, which BMW would not provide for run flat tires. So, it appears that BMW does indeed equip some of its cars with regular tires, and that seems to include the current M4.
Michelin had a vendor display at O'fest, I was curious and asked, it's been 2 weeks now, but I recall they said the M4 stock Michelins are -not- rft.
