Is is possible to have the dealer (or someone) install an OEM HUD on a vehicle that did not come with it?

Too many electronics involved. Anything that involves retrofitting in a modern BMW automatically qualifies it as too expensive and too much work to put in, just like how someone was once asking if he could retrofit nav into his car. Just not worth the hassle.

What Botond said, plus: You would also need to change out the upper half of the dashboard (to accommodate the projector) and the windscreen (for the semi-reflective projection surface). Still interested? ;)

There are aftermarket HUD products available. There are pros and cons to this.

Plus side is that the aftermarket units don't require removing the windshield or tearing up your dashboard.

Minus side is that if you're looking for an integrated, factory "look," prepare to be disappointed and lower your expectations. Nobody does "factory" LIKE the factory.

Of course, if you're creative, and don't mind violating the warranty on your aftermarket toy, one might be able to find a way to make it LOOK integrated.

A semi-translucent decal or plastic "lens" that you can stick on the inside of your windshield will usually suffice as a projection surface.

However if you're insisting on factory, here goes:

Please note the price of the projector by itself. That's just for starters. We haven't gotten to the cost of the windshield and upper dash pad yet.

Interestingly enough they don't show a separate dash for HUD, presumably for cost reasons. You probably have a dummy plug covering the hole for the HUD. Also, if you have I-Drive, or if this requires it, you may also have to have your car coded for the install. I didn't see any separate push buttons for the HUD so that's probably integrated into the I-Drive software also.

At any rate, you're looking at one hugely expensive retrofit. Might be cheaper just to sell your car and buy one already equipped with HUD.

What an installed, factory HUD looks like through an E60 windshield
