the car has 54k on a new engine and twice in a month has quit on me. the first time i had to get a wrecker to haul it to the mechanics. last time, i cut the ac off and after three minutes it cranked and i was able to limp home. could this be related to the ac? i noticed the manuel stated to have the oxygen sensor changed at 50k ,something i havent had done yet. any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You must take it to a bmw shop to have it diagnosed. Guessing over the internet is not going to be helpful unless we know the codes in the computer. The oxygen sensor is not likely to cause it to cut off. What was the outcome at the mechanic the last time? You say after 3 minutes with the A/C off it would crank, would it not crank before or would it just not start? If your mechanic cannot diagnose it properly, you need to find one that can.
