Rob, You were where I was last year. Almost exactly my story. NY car (2005 wagon), requisite rust. Snapped bolt, cut in-between the pinch bolt, resorted to the drill. I used titanium tipped drill bits instead, and broke one of them (that I was able to fish out). Slowly drilled all the way through with progressively larger bits and refitted with a Grade 10 bolt and nut. Several months later, the other side was torn, too. This time I used lots of MAPP gas heat on that bolt, along with PB Blaster I kept an eye on the other end as I undid it with a breaker bar. It worked much better, and I refitted it with a new BMW bolt. As for the axle nut, I did not have too many problems with it. I pounded the safety detents with a hammer-and-screwdriver, then used a jackstand to hold up the socket. Put a long iron pipe over the breaker bar and the nut came off, no problem. Now if only my Z3 project didn't fight me so badly...
