318i cold start problem

    Hi everyone,
    I have a 94 318i with the 4 auto it starts fine but it seems like the cold start funtion stays on, and im getting a rich burn when warmed up. and also rough idle. any help would be great it's my first BMW, I have been a Volvo man for many many years, I look forward to getting her back in shape. I have herd she could get up to 40mpg. Thanks J Rogers.

    It sounds like you have a bad coolant temp sensor. You need to check the OHM resitance of the sensor cold and hot. If you know how to do it I can find the specs for you. Let me know if you need them.

    My wife has a 94 318i also. She has been getting about 35mpg. It was only getting around 28mpg last month. I replaced the O2 sensor and it really made a differance.

    That makes since. This car has 240,000 miles on it and I just love rebuilding People Left overs:rolleyes: she runs good when i first start it, but as it gets warm it starts running rough, with a real rich exhaust. Its been sitting for a year and the weather is starting to break, so i would like to get busy. I have already fixed a leaking tappet cover into the plug holes, and i have a rear wheel bearing to tackle next. I'm currently replacing the engine wiring harness on my 87 Volvo 740 TurboWagon, I found a nice used OME updated harness for a $140. on eBay, and I just finish it today. J Rogers
