I own a 335i xdrive with both Sport and M package. I want the Stage 2 mod. Should I also upgrade the oil cooler? Also what driveability issues will I experience? I will really only use the added hp at the track or an occaisional stoplight war. Also, if I don't use it much will the added hp also increase the fuel mileage due to the added efficiency of the engine?
The stories I've seen say that the Dinan mods are more limp-mode-resistant than other tunes. But racetracks are extreme environments and anything can happen. I don't know what your educational background is, but you don't get something for nothing. The engine is not more efficient, as the stroke - which extracts energy from the expansion - is still the same. It's no more efficient. And when you're under load, you're burning more gasoline, so mpg goes down. The Dinan package is set for HP, not efficiency. HP equals gasoline-air mixture. Which equals lower mpg.
Thank you for the feedback, as a college graduate and a previous owner of a supercharged vehicle, the mod I installed was hardware related, not software, so I acheived a 10% gain in fuel efficiency and a boost in front wheel hp from 194 to 233.
What was the question? Going to the track? With Dinan software? Get the Dinan oil cooler! Already got BMW's stock oil cooler? Well, it's better than nothing. But there's a reason they made it bigger for the 335is. . .
De nada My opinion is no more valid than anybody else's. And I have seen many a 335i in West Coast schools that ran perfectly fine with the stock oil cooler without going into Limp Home Mode. But my understanding is that BMW adjusted the Limp-Home-Mode Actuation Point to, like, 325 degrees---up from 300?---and put in higher-reading gauges (WTF?!) in order to "cure" the early limp-home situation. Synthetics have changed the rules; in the Olden Times, oil started to break down at 300 degrees. I would always prefer to err on the side of cooler oil!
