When the car is locked the alarm system on my 2001 740i goes off arbitrarily and for no apparent reason (nothing touching the car). What causes this and is it easy to correct?

Most common cause is the hood switch. The only way to tell is to scan the car to see what sensor caused the alarm to activate.

It is the switch that tells the alarm system that the hodd is closed. I think it is located near the driver's shock tower on that car.

How do you scan the sensor ... does that require specialized equipment only a dealer or service provider would have ?

You have to scan the car through the diagnostic port. A good independent service provider can do it.
