The E90 represents BMW's fifth generation 3 Series, introduced in 2005. Even with the proliferation of models that didn't exist a decade ago, it continues to represent about half of the BMW brand's sales in the U.S. and may reach 150,000 sales in 2008. For this model, the coupe and convertible have different development numbers: E91 station wagon (aka touring or estate), E92 coupe, and E93 convertible or cabriolet.

The 3 Series is BMW's most honored car and even as the competition gets better, BMW manages to stay on top of the pack in reviews, in year-end awards, and in sales. Car and Driver in January 2008 cited the 3 Series as one of its 10Best cars for the 17th straight year.

The 3 Series comes with two engine choices (3.0 liter normally aspirated, 328i; and 3.0-liter twin turbo, 335i); rear-drive and all-wheel-drive; sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible. All told, 12 models. The E90 family is the first 3 Series to offer a hard top convertible (spring 2007 in the U.S.) and all-wheel-drive coupe. The 328i is BMW's single best-selling model.

    2008 MODEL ............ PRICE

    328i Sedan ............ $33,175
    328xi Sedan ........... $35,075
    335i Sedan ............ $39,675
    335xi Sedan ........... $41,575
    328i Sports Wagon ..... $34,975
    328xi Sports Wagon .... $36,875
    328i Coupe ............ $36,075
    328xi Coupe ........... $37,875
    335i Coupe ............ $41,575
    335Xi Coupe ........... $43,375
    328i Convertible ...... $43,975
    335i Convertible ...... $49,875
    Includes $775 shipping.

Here are sales since 2007 for the 3 Series:

    YEAR ... SALES ...... CHANGE
    2007 ... 141,000 est +18% E90
    2006 ... 120,180 .. +12% E90
    2005 ... 106,950 .... 0% E90/E46
    2004 ... 106,549 ... -5% E46
    2003 ... 111,944 ... -3% E46
    2002 ... 115,428 .. +12% E46
    2001 ... 103,227 .. +15% E46
    2000 .... 89,681 .. +16% E46

The competition may be getting better in car reviews, but it isn't getting very close in sales. Infiniti will increase 2007 G37 sales about 23%, enough to give it half as many sales as the 3 Series. Here are projected 2007 sales:

    BMW 3 Series ..........141,000
    Infiniti G35/G37 .......71,000
    Mercedes C Class .......62,000
    Acura TL ...............57,000
    Cadillac CTS ...........55,000
    Lexus IS 250/IS 350.....54,000
    Audi A4/S4 .............45,000

As a trivia addition, the 3 series 2006 models remained the e46 chassis for coupe and cabrio models. Only the sedans (325i/330i-xi) made the debut as the new e90 body style in 06. The following 07 year the e92 coupe debut as the 335i and 328i, later in the same year finally came the e93 335i/328i convertible.

The e91 is a 3 series wagon came out 2006.
