    Rob,

In your quest to get an affordable rear-wheel drive BMW 3 series wagon with a standard, I submit to you the challenge of making one yourself with a 5-speed swap. I am in the process of convincing my wife letting me do the very same to our E30 convertible.

Now I know the E46 (or E90) might be more difficult, but I did stumble upon a local Craigslist ad (no relation to me whatsoever) for such a thing from a guy's 328i. You might have enough material for a winter's worth of columns!

We have a 325xi wagon, automatic - my wife loves it once we got it sorted out. We prefer the all-wheel drive in Upstate NY and we like our X3 and E30 325ix better! But if you insist on a unicorn RWD manual wagon, Make One!
