My 97 328ci overheated resulting in a newly rebuilt head. Car runs fine but check engine light is on. Replaced the camshaft positioning sensor to no avail. A local independent BMW mechanic checked it and said there was a Vanos issue. He was unable to diagnose from there. I am leary of the local BMW dealer due to past history of multiple misdiagnosis & overcharging. Any ideas on getting the right diagnosis? Jim

Did the CEL indicate a bad camshaft positioning sensor?

If the code is because the cam timing is too far advanced or retarded it could be that the cams were not set properly when the head was replaced. What, specifically, is the code that it is throwing and where are you located so the locals can recommend a shop?
