My 2001 Z3 3.0 w/5spd auto. is intermittently displaying the trans. fault or warning light. What's going on and or is this something needing prompt attention? THANKS

That warning light indicates that there is an electronically detected fault in your transmission. Something simple may be to blame - but, whatever the culprit your transmission needs to be assessed to avoid further damage.

I would dealer it. When I got the warning light on my e36 325i, I was able to change my transmission fluid and the light went away when it was electronically reset. Then, about a year later, the transmission failed completely - most likely due to excessive wear of the clutch packs (driver idiot :p) ...at that time there was a large amount of debris (metal shavings) in the transmission case itself. I always think that I could have avoided catastrophic failure with a partial rebuild earlier.
