97 m3 manual trans. After turning the ignition to either accessory or starting the car brake lights illuminate. If headlights are turned on get intermittent license plate light error. Brake lights and license plate lights are turned on when checked. Replaced brake light switch, problem still present.

Are you talking about the brake light bulb failure or the brake idiot light on the dash?

If its a bulb failure try cleaning the bulb bases and sockets, if they get a little dirty/corroded the failure will often display.

If its the dash light you should check your pad thicknesses and pad wear sensors.

I've heard of it happening before, make absolutely certain you have the correct bulbs, BMWs do some weird things when they have a slightly different bulb in the socket

Many mahalos for the assistance, final fix had to bend the bracket that holds the brake light switch to make better contact with the stop.
