I am considering having the oil and filter changed after just 1500 miles, is overkill? My understanding is that some metal particles produced during engine construction could be in the system.

If you are talking about a brand new car, and are at a total of 1500 miles, then I would consider it necessary. BMW used to do break-in service at 1200 miles, but ever since they picked up the tab for scheduled maintenance, they have only done it on M cars (to my knowledge).

I would say go for it.

    I'd do it. Use the 1200 mile M engine break-in checklist as a 'go-by'.....

I would suggest it too! There can be metal in there, best to get it out.

    Oil changes

Old fashioned, I guess. I want to change the oil on my E46 every 7500 miles. Synthetic/Schmetic - Don't believe it's helping preserve anything at 15000 to 25000 changes. Can anybody give me a message, "Why not"?

My oil is changed in my M3 and X3 at between 5500 and 6500 miles. Mike Miller of Tech Talk recommends a 7500 mile interval so that is just be me being more anal.

I'd recommend anyone interested write Mike Miller (techtalk@roundel.org) and request a copy of his "Old School" Maintenance article. Very useful information.

    Cheers..

    Oil changes

Thanks. I'll go with more frequent oil changes then.

1,200-1,500 mile break in for all fluids (oil, trans, diff) is a must for new bimmers. 7,500 oil change intervals would do just fine.
