I have an 87 325i w/193K miles. How frequently (mileage/time) should I change the timing belt?

    Thanks,

4 years or 50-60,000, whichever comes first.

    Botond Pal,
Thanks for the prompt response. It's been 50k miles, but 5 years, so I'd better get to it.

Definitely. I have purchased a few E30s at well below market value because the owners did not want to change the timing belt.

Engine on my 88 E30 was replaced by a previous owner about 15,000 miles ago. Any chance they didn't replace the timing belt, or would that be a given?

There is always that chance. They could have replaced the motor for any number of reasons and gotten a used engine with unknown miles on the belt. It is pretty cheap insurance to change it if you do not know.

    sticker

    I'm changing mine soon.
The sticker in the engine said it was changed at 117k and now it has a little over $187k on it. Definitely time. Plus, you can never tell whether the prev owner did it, unless they have records which mine didn't. I figure i'd get the 50cent sticker to remind me to change it. As well as a little notebook which I'll keep in the glove comparnemt to record its maintenance history.

Stop driving it right now! That thing is on borrowed time. Any indication of how many years since it has been changed?
