Does anyone have an opinion as to what is the correct oil to add? Owners manual isn’t clear, my local dealer says 0W-30 or 5W-30 are appropriate provided synthetic.

    Thnx

Do you have the V8 or the 6-cyl? Unless you've been a real driving fiend and accumulated a ton of miles in a couple years, a couple years old seems early to be experiencing much oil consumption, even if going along with BMW's extended oil-change intervals. The 1st-gen turbo V8's (awhile ago, now) developed problems with oil consumption due to heat from the turbos nestled in the 'V' cooking valve seals. I believe BMW's made some changes to address that problem, but, the basic V8 design I don't think has changed much, so offhand, oil consumption is something to be leery of particularly with the turbo V8's.

    Castrol says this for the 6, V8, or M6 - Edge 5w-40 U.S.

Presumably BMW would sell you whatever's correct if you opt to source it from the dealer.

A thread on it here -

Looks like the main thing is oil that meets BMW LL01 spec, which should be stated on the bottle. Most likely listed in the specs small print on the back of the bottle.

Any full synthetic 0w30 or 5w30 is fine for a top off.
