Greetings, Newish member having a problem with a strange oil leak. Thanks for any responses. At the bottom of the engine one of the lower (bottom) bolt ,at what appears to be the engine block is seeping oil when engine is running. It is front of the drain plug and not the oil pan. It is at only one bolt and not knowing why I'm reluctant from re-torqueing this bolt. Definitely not the oil pan and it is a 16 mm bolt...... so not too sure if it is a bad seal or gasket. Any clue how it can be repaired or how this happen It's in an X-1 that has 64,000 miles and about 5 years old. Appreciate your input- Imants Jersey Shore
The picture is too large to upload. However, the SA at Circle BMW did review a photo I sent and it is a transfer case bolt. Says to clean it and apply sealer (RTV or silicone) and that may fix it. According to them the threads get "porous".... whatever that is. I have a tech question in to Mike Miller about this as well. Still digging around for some opinions before I do anything. I'll try to reload the photo as a smaller file later. Thanks
That is your front diff and the bolt is a support bolt that mounts the diff to the oil pan. Strange to have engine oil just at that point. Possible a porous oil pan bolt hole but thats extremely rare. I would recommend removing just that bolt and seeing if there is oil on the threads. If there is then the pan is porous and just use some plumbers tape on the threads and torque the bolt back in. That should fix the leak. If there is no oil on the threads then the oil is coming from some where else.
