There is a lovely Valencia Orange 1M available right now in my area, but I am surprised at the price the dealer is asking: $64K ($10K over original MSRP) on a two year old, two owner car with 20K miles! Are these cars really that rare? I can't think of another recent BMW model that is commanding a 20% premium over original list 2 years and 20K miles from new....? Everyone seems to love these cars, but I am just wondering if I would be totally nuts to buy this car. By the way, to the 1M owner who misses his Z3 M Coupe, I miss mine too! It is the one car I no longer own that I miss the most, truly unique.
One website has 4 listed from 65K to 74K. http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-2011-BMW-1M-Coupe-t45060 A car is worth whatever someone is willing to spend. Less than 1000 where sold.
While asking price isn't necessarily what the car will sell for, the 1M Coupes have held to at least MSRP or more by a couple to three thousand. Yes, I do have a "dog in the fight" WRT pricing. @wellardmac: Have you driven one or been in one? If not you *might* revise your opinion after that ride. Don't be a hater. Yes, they do well at autocrosses: http://autox4u.com/nnjrlive/results.html http://autox4u.com/nnjrlive/fullpax.html http://autox4u.com/nnjrlive/fullraw.html And I get four 19" Hoosiers (315 & 265) inside to take to and from the event, too.
Yes, I've driven 1Ms several times on the track. I loved driving it - nice nimble, handles well, but I'm not being a hater, I'm stating a simple fact. While the 1M is a very nice and capable car, and a lot of fun, it is simply outclassed by an M3 at a similar price - plain and simple, indisputable fact.
May I suggest to put your money where your mouth is and come out to the SCCA Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Neb. at the beginning of September? BTW, the M3 goes in F Stock (if the car is set up to stock rules). http://www.motorsportreg.com/index....9A35B-D3EF-31B8-165BDC1745011154#.UgLmoZ3D-Ul I'll buy the first beers.
You're comparing apples to oranges. In a straight line the M3 wins. On the straights and turns of a track, the M3 wins. In autocross an Miata or Mini wins. The 1M still loses.
I guess you're still hating. A straight line? Now there's a challenge. Review the links for results I posted. Or use the SCCA results. Now if you said, a Corvette FRC beats a 1M, ya got me there. If you're getting beat by a Miata or MINI there's something wrong.
But back to the topic, will a M3 resell at or above MSRP? Maybe not. The 1M Coupe pulls strong numbers over the sticker. Watch eBay or autotrader cars and see what the sell for. It is impressive.
I think you need to buy a dictionary and look up the definition of hating. I was complimentary of the 1M, but stated that the M3 is a better choice for the price. Here's a review from Motortrend that I would agree with: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests...ries_m_vs_2011_bmw_m3_comparison/viewall.html I guess Motortrend reviewers are haters too in your book - especially considering that this was written before the prices of the 1M escalated into the land of ridiculous and made the M3 and ever better buy on a dollar for dollar comparison.
I agree that it's impressive that they seem to be commanding such prices, but I would say that it's unwarranted and probably will not last.
Surely you jest with Motortrend? The base their Car/Truck/SUV of the Year based on advertising pages bought in the magazine. Dig deeper on the "methodology" in their testing (any comparos, not just BMW) and you'll find flipping a coin will offer better results. If I may counter with this: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=628567 Again back to topic, the 1M has been out of production nearly two years and still getting the excellent resale value. What's the depreciation of a 2011 M3 these days?
