Heat does not work after about 45 to 60 minutes

I have a '90 750 and am having a problem with the heater. As long as I'm driving around town (short trips) it seems to work correctly. But, if I head out on the highway after about 45 minutes or so, it gets absolutely no heat until the knob is turned all the way on until it clicks. It will then heat until I turn that down. Where should I start?

    Thanks...Lee

Thanks. The car is in the shop for the next couple of days getting front shocks installed. I just don't have facilities to do that with snow on the ground. That was actually where I was thinking might be a good spot to start. And I don't remember for sure but I'm pretty sure the build date was in late '89.
