I have a 2002 M5 with 90,XXX mi, My front strut just went out and need a new ones. My bmw specialist showed me the price and what I should get. Does any one know of a way to get them cheeper or at a better deal. The ones I have access to are bilstien sport and standard? or maybe a different brand that you prefer?
You can't go wrong with Bilstein Sports, but make sure that the rest are equivalent! Don't want to have mismatching shocks/struts; it wouldn't feel right.
What are the numbers? Unless we know what you're paying, we have no idea of its value. As already mentioned, the Bilsteins are a great product. Why do you want to be "cheap" with an M5?
I don't want to go cheap and crappy. I want to get the best or what I can afford at this time, I will probably get the blisten but I didn't know if any one knew of a better price then the ones listed. my BMW mechanic can get them for 390$ and I found some for 250 $ same kind, just looking for the best deals thats all. Also if some one had a better brand I should get? . thank you.
But.... I might add here that it is pretty bad manners to shop around for better prices on parts and then expect your local BMW technician to install your parts for the same price. Remember part of the way he pays his bills is to make a few dollars on parts. A good working relationship with your technician will yield many more savings in the future. Juat ask my customers... For an E39 M5 I would recomend OEM or OE shocks and struts unless you are modifying the car for pretty serious track use, in which case you will want an adjustable shock. Enjoy!
Even the higher price you were quoted is not too unreasonable for a Bilstein insert set. I would talk to your installer to see if he/she has a problem with you supplying the parts from another source. Sometimes, they can match that price and still make a little money for themselves, so you should offer the opportunity.
