Olympic Peninsula Driving Tour

May 17, 2014
Love driving? I mean, really love driving? Then join us for a one-day Tour that most guidebooks suggest planning over two or three days. It’s been a few years since the Club drove this route; back by popular demand. With the Olympic Mountains taking up the middle of the Peninsula, there are no shortcuts here, just Highway 101 almost all the way around. Still reading? Good! The payoff here is going to be some of the best scenery in the state. We’ll see the Olympics, the Hoh Rain Forest, Pacific Ocean beaches. We’ll also make a little detour to the Juan de Fuca Highway, a great twisty section with the kind of curves that remind you why you drive a BMW. Since May is early in the tourist season, we’ll probably see fewer back ends of monstrous RVs. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the Starbucks parking lot at 2032 S.320th in Federal Way. Take exit 143 off of I-5 and head west, this Starbucks is on the north (right) side of the street. After a short drivers’ meeting, we’ll leave at 8:30 am sharp. We’ll start out heading south to Olympia and get onto Highway 101, stopping for a break at beautiful Lake Quinault in the morning. Our lunch stop will be at Kalaloch on the coast, either at the Lodge or weather permitting, on the State Park beach. From there we’ll head out toward Forks and Highway 112 along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with Port Angeles being the end of the official tour. The route home from there will be your choice. Bring a blanket and a lunch if you want to picnic at the Park, binoculars, cameras and as always, a sense of adventure! As of this writing, I have yet to pre-drive the route, but I would expect the return to the Seattle area to be around 6:00 pm or so. The only requirement is BMW CCA membership. Check the Club Events section at bmwpugetsound.com and Around the Sound email notifications as we get closer for updates.
