Sold SOLD - $1600 1999 BMW 540iA for $1999 (needs a lot of work)

For your consideration is my 1999 BMW 540. I am the second owner of this car, and I have owned it for almost 20 years. I am selling it because it needs a good amount of work, and I don’t have the time or the space to do it. If you’re looking for a road trip ready vehicle, this is not it. There are plenty of other BMWs for sale in Massachusetts that you should consider. If you are interested in a project, or a restoration, or are mechanically handy, please keep reading for a full and honest disclosure of the state of this car. This car has a significant issue that needs to be addressed before it can be driven over long distances: the timing chain guides are broken. While this does not involve many expensive parts, it does involve a significant amount of labor removing the radiator and the front part of the engine. The Service Engine Soon light is on. A quick search on YouTube for “e39 timing chain guide” will show you what you are in for. Still interested? The rear suspension needs a full replacement. This is also a laborious procedure that involves removal of the full rear seat. Videos for this job are also on YouTube and step by steps on many DIY forums. This car also leaks oil. Not a lot, but, the rear main seal needs to be replaced. Inexpensive part but a lot of labor. Could you drive it with this oil leak for thousands of miles? Yes, but you should know that it is part of the deal. What else? Well the rear right wheel speed sensor needs to be replaced. It throws an error in the brake and ABS lights are on. The trunk spring is broken, the headlights are a little foggy and it has rust in the usual spots for this car: below the gas cap on the fender, and on the rocker panels on both sides. Dings, dents and scratches on all panels. <br> What’s good about this car? Well, the interior is in very good condition and has no stains smells rips or smell of smoke. The car has a valid inspection sticker through the end of August, and has a clean title ready to transfer to a new owner.i have all of the paperwork associated with the car over the past 20 years, with manual and spare keys, including the valet. I have set the price for this car to be fair, in my opinion, after considering and looking at all of the other BMW five series of this generation for sale in New England and in the country. It is amongst the lowest priced 540s you can find - if not the lowest. Craigslist, eBay, CarGrus and KBB: take a look at all of these and you’ll see the pricing data I considered. Serious buyers can review a Carfax that I have, along with a prepurchase inspection report completed at my expense at German performance service in Brighton Massachusetts. I think that this should give you a full and fair understanding of this car condition. If you are interested I’m serious and have the cash in hand to buy this car, I am happy to show it to you at a time that works for both of us, so long as you agree to wear a facemask. We can open it up, look around, start it up, and take it for a spin down the street, but not much further: because of the timing chain guides I don’t want to suffer engine damage as part of the sale process. Questions about maintenance or condition are welcome. If do you want a picture of some thing specific I’m happy to send it to you. Thank you for taking the time to read this ad and considering my car. Robert
