It will fit, BUT if your 1996 318 was never ordered with the factory hardtop... You need to also buy an E36 hardtop installation kit for your convertible for the two small perches that the rear pins lock into. This kit also contains the electrical contact points. It's pretty easy to install. These are widely available from the dealer and most other BMW parts retailers. Expect to pay around $150 to $200 for this kit.
